Julian Stocker, Tenor

Julian Stocker graduated from York University where he gained a BA Hons degree in Music.  His career involves a mixture of concert and recording work both as a soloist and choral singer, as well as performing in operas and musicals.

As an oratorio soloist he has a wide repertoire ranging from early works such as Monteverdi’s 1610 Vespers and Handel’s Messiah to 20th century music such as Britten’s Saint Nicolas and Arvo Pärt’s Passio.  He is particularly in demand as an Evangelist in Bach’s St John Passion, St Matthew Passion and Christmas Oratorio, whilst in the world of contemporary music he premiered Shameful Vice by Michael Finnissy (Vocem Electric Voice Theatre), and sang the part of St George in Karen Wimhurst’s Dragon Pageant with the Bournemouth Sinfonietta. 

Musical theatrical roles have included Fulbert in Kendal Kirkland’s Eloise and Abelard at the Southwark Festival, and in modern opera he was the Samurai Warrior in Alejandro Vinão’s Rashomon, performing the work throughout Europe.  Other operatic roles have included Pedrillo in Mozart’s Abduction from the Seraglio (Holland Park Opera) and Caspar in Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors (Windsor Castle). 

As an experienced recording artist he has appeared on several award winning discs, most notably with The Cardinall’s Musick. He has also given song recitals in French and English song and German Lied.

He is a full time member of the Choir of Westminster Abbey, The English Concert,  Ensemble Dumont and Wide Angle Voice Theatre as well as appearing regularly with the BBC Singers, The Tallis Scholars, The Sixteen, The Geoffrey Mitchell Choir, CM90, Opus Anglicanum and European Voices under Sir Simon Rattle.

Julian was born in London and is married to the soprano Karen Woodhouse.
