Miriam Allan, Soprano

Identified as a gifted musician from childhood, Miriam Allan was Head Chorister at Christ Church Cathedral, Newcastle and a soloist with the Song Company and on national radio whilst still at school. Born in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia in 1977 Miriam has been based in London since 2003. She holds a Bachelor of Music, first class honours degree and university medal, and Master of Creative Arts (University of Newcastle, Australia), completing her masters with an Australian Postgraduate Award from the federal government.

In Australia, Miriam has been a soloist with the Sydney Philharmonic Choirs, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Chacona, Coro Innominata, Arcadia and as a guest member of the Song Company and Sounds Baroque. Her appearance in the extraordinary Dreaming Transportation at the 2003 Sydney Festival and its subsequent recording for the ABC cemented Miriam's reputation as a fine ambassador for contemporary Australian music around the world. Miriam has performed as a soloist and ensemble member for numerous Australian recordings including Semele and The Fairy Queen with Pinchgut Opera, Olimpia - The Secular Cantatas of Alessandro Scarlatti (ABC), Prayer Dances (Move Records), Handel Italian Cantatas (Tall Poppies) and on soundtracks for Sydney Theatre Company and the feature film The Man who Sued God.

Since moving to London, Miriam has appeared as a soloist with many leading orchestras and choirs in the United Kingdom and Europe, including Concerto Copenhagen, the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, Il Fondamento, Gewandhaus Kammerchor, London Handel Orchestra, Leipzig Kammerorchester, Batzdorfer Hofkapelle, Concerto Köln, ChorWerk Ruhr.

In 2004 Miriam made her debut at the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig in performances of Bach's Mass in B Minor and at the Handel Festival in Halle, Germany singing the soprano solo in the annual performance of Messiah. She was invited to return to the Gewandhaus to sing and record. A recording, featuring her as the soprano soloist in Mozart Requiem with the Gewandhaus Kammerchor and Leipzig Kammerorchester, has recently been released on Naxos. 2005 engagements included a solo recital in the London Handel Festival with Laurence Cummings and concerts in the Barossa Festival with Lars Ulrik Mortensen; concerts in Canberra, Sydney Melbourne and Germany. She appeared in Pinchgut Opera's production of the Rameau's Dardanus and concerts, broadcast live across Australia, for Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and the ABC. In 2006 she made her debut with Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the Monteverdi Choir in the USA and Europe, featured as a soloist in performances of Mozart's Mass in C Minor and further engagements with them in France, Spain, Italy and at the BBC Proms; performances with Les Arts Florissants; and a tour of Israel performing Pergolesi's Stabat Mater with Michael Chance and the Israel Camerata. Recently Miriam returned to sing with Les Arts Florissants in performances of Vivaldi's much loved motet Nulla in Mundo, pax sincera.

Current engagements include concerts with Emma Kirkby and London Baroque, a return to Israel, staged performances of Handel's Acis and Galatea with Concerto Copenhagen at the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music and Holland Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht, directed by Lars Ulrik Mortensen, and a series with the Auckland Philharmonia.
